Before you travel

Travel advisories. As of October 15, 2026, the U.S. Department of State keeps Venezuela at Level 3 of 4 (“Reconsider Travel”) and at Level 4 (“Do Not Travel”) the 20-mile strip along the Colombian border and the states of Amazonas, Apure, Guárico and Táchira, Aragua outside Maracay, and rural areas of Bolívar. The United Kingdom advises against all but essential travel to the whole country, Zulia included, and since October 14 against all travel to Amazonas state, Bolívar's Arco Minero (mining arc), Delta Amacuro south of the Orinoco and within 40 km of the borders with Colombia, Brazil and Guyana. Spain recommends extreme caution and not traveling at night in the interior.[54][55][56]

Documents. Carry original documents when traveling in the interior. The INTT (national land transport agency) lists what drivers must carry: cédula (national ID card), driver's license, medical certificate, civil liability insurance and the vehicle's registration card.[55][57]

Fuel. In September 2026 there were lines kilometers long and power outages at Lara's gas stations, with a gasoline quota that the transport operators' union puts at 60 liters a week. Outside the big cities shortages persist: leave with a full tank.[55][58]

After the earthquakes. The earthquakes of June 24, 2026, damaged roads and buildings in Falcón, Yaracuy, Miranda, La Guaira, Maracay, Valencia and Caracas. Maiquetía airport reopened on September 1 with temporary terminals and few flights: confirm each leg with the airline and the state of the road before you leave.[59][60]
